The novel is told in five parts, each one focusing on a different character and the themes that identify that person. The main relationship, however, is that of Mary and
Jos? Luis, and it is foreshadowed from the first sentence of the book. Mary is at the airport to meet him, a refugee from El Salvador that she wants to
pass off as Mexican to avoid the authorities (Martinez, 1997). But the moment she sees him she knows what he is, and what they will be to one another: "His
nation chewed him up and spat him out like a pi?on shell, and when he emerged from an airplane one late afternoon, I knew I would one day make love
with him. He had arrived in Albuquerque to start life over, or at least sidestep death, on this husk of red earth, this Nuevo M?jico" (Martinez, 1997, p. 3). But
Mary is not only na?ve, she is still figuring out who she is and what her purpose in life might be, and what her heritage is (Diaz, 1999). Because she
is still wandering, Jos? Luis represents something wonderful to her: a man who is committed to a cause (Diaz, 1999). Not only that, he is, in her opinion, the ideal
personification of a Latino (Diaz, 1999). That is, Mary is creating Jos? Luis to meet the idea she has of what a committed, Latino man should be (Diaz, 1999). She
is defining him, in other words, so that he will meet her standards; the trap, of course, is that she doesnt get to know who he really is until much
