Although the immediate audience of the poem is the womans son, Hughes is speaking for all oppressed people who have overcome daunting circumstances, and to their progeny, male and
female, who similarly must learn to persevere and triumph (Rickford 19). Being that racism resides at the core of the sons disillusionment,
Hughes clearly illustrates how humanity has been enduring an ongoing battle for centuries: the strained relations of race and class as a result of white privilege. Despite efforts to
put the past behind, signs remain at nearly every juncture that there still exists a strong sense of racial and class dissension, particularly between blacks and whites. The mother,
in her simple yet compelling tone, does not want to see her son succumb to racially-related struggles for survival; that she can share with her son the same experiences of
doubt, frustration and near hopelessness gives a sense of prospect for the future if she - throughout her troubled life - was able to always push forward. Hughes illustrates
