as the "greatest composer of the Renaissance," with some scholars ranking him alongside Back, Mozart and Beethoven.1 In particular, Josquins personality and career are frequently compared to that of Beethoven,
earning him another designation as the "Beethoven of his time."2 In 1987, Josquins "Missa Pange lingua," performed by the Tallis Scholars, won Gramophones "Record of the Year," which is the
only instance when a recording of early music has achieved this honor.3 Recent scholarship, however, has necessitated some reconsideration of these accolades, as archival findings have pushed forward Josquins presumed
birth date by ten years, from ca. 1440 to ca. 1450-55.4 This development has huge implications for the way in which Josquin is perceived in music history, as the birth
day of 1440 identified Josquin as an innovator, which no longer holds true to the same extent with the later birth date.5 It is believed that Josquin was born roughly
around the year 1450 in either villages of Henegouwen or Hainault in the Netherlands.6 Little is known about his childhood, but it is known that he sang in the choir
at the Collegiate Church at Saint-Quentin, where he later became a canon and choirmaster.7 It is thought by many scholars that Josquin studied music with Jean dOckeghem.8 Historical documents show
