In his work entitled If Aristotle Ran General Motors, Tom Morris argues that if people were honest, and displayed desirable attributes in the course of doing business, they would likely prosper. This is true in spite of the fact that ruthless businessmen have reputations of doing whatever it takes to make a deal. Interestingly, in todays business environment, people note that those who truly prosper lie a bit or cheat, or fudge numbers. Some do this to an extreme, get caught and go to jail. Still others only slightly lie or misrepresent themselves. Yet, Morris believes that this is not good and people can prosper even while being honest. If people considered the virtues of truth, beauty, goodness, and unity, they would do well in business and in life. There would be no need to lie or misrepresent the truth even a little. Rather, the good guy always wins, at least in Morriss opinion. Morris begins the work with a look at truth and while philosophers have contemplated the problem of truth, Morris succinctly defines it as follows: "Truth is just that mapping of reality that corresponds to the way things are" (25). Of course, many great philosophers, such as Descartes, has argued that it is hard to tell what reality is, because the truth has to do with perception. It is indeed known that everyone perceives things differently. However, there is to some extent universal truths. When reading Morriss work, one is not bothered by the idea of perception. Rather, honesty is present when ones conscious is clear. One sees something, knows something and does the right thing. That is all there is to it. An example ...
