is actually the most important active ingredient in the opium poppy (Kuhn, Swartzwelder and Wilson 175). In 1805, morphine had become purified (Kuhn, Swartzwelder and Wilson 175). People had
begun to use the drug for a variety of reasons. It would become even more popular in 1853 when the hypodermic needle was invented by Alexander Wood (Kuhn, Swartzwelder and
Wilson 175). After the Civil War there was a "wave of addiction to injectable narcotics" (Kuhn, Swartzwelder and Wilson 175). This is something that followed the widespread use of morphine
during the Civil War (Kuhn, Swartzwelder and Wilson 175). The soldiers used the injectable variety (Kuhn, Swartzwelder and Wilson 175). In 1898, the Bayer Company created a method of adding
more chemicals into the morphine to render it a more soluble in fat (Kuhn, Swartzwelder and Wilson 175). This allowed the drug to enter the brain more quickly (Kuhn, Swartzwelder
and Wilson 175). Today, "morphine is a major constituent of the seed pod. It is a potent opiate, and is used in injectable or pill form to relive pain after
surgery" (Kuhn, Swartzwelder and Wilson 178). It is also used sometimes in other instances to control severe pain. Morphine does provide benefits to those who need a significant amount of
pain relief. Opiates are in one form or another perhaps the most significant type of pain drug available today. Therefore, although it is the case that morphine is dangerous, and
