millennium B.C., Moroccan history begins to reflect the presence of Berbers with the settlement of Arab men whose primary focus was as missionaries and conquerors rather than colonists, a status
that precluded them from traveling with women. As such, they were compelled to marry and procreate with sedentary Berbers, ultimately infusing the farmers and townspeople with Arab culture.
Morocco, which has earned the moniker of being the "geopolitical bridge and a cultural mediator between the Arab world and both Europe and
West Africa" (Rinehart, 1991, p. PG), is particularly fortunate in having sidestepped a fate that befell other societies: succumbing to Ottoman rule. The issue of freedom as it related
to ethnic and religious diversity appeared to be caught in a perpetual holding pattern, inasmuch as the quest for these freedoms was not bound to materialize without much battle and
bloodshed. When addressing this point with regard to Moroccos ability to defy the oppressive existence of the Ottoman Empire, the concept of natural rights comes to mind, a struggle
