Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints (more commonly known as "L.D.S." or "Mormons") can be relatively problematic. There are numerous critics of Mormons and Mormonism who would argue that Mormons are not Christians. And, there are those Mormons who doubt the legitimacy of Catholicism due to its focus on the Virgin Mary. Ironically, each of the two religions is a dominant force throughout the world. Each has always had an aggressive missionary focus and each is notable for the large families of many if not most of its members. The most faithful of both religions follow a conservative approach in terms of social and political policies. For example, neither religion allows for the ordination of women or placing women in positions of significant religious authority. And, both look to one man as Gods singular authority on Earth. (For the Catholics that man is the Pope. For the Mormons it is their churchs president, Gordon B. Hinckley). However, the student working on this project should not make the mistake of thinking that Mormons and Catholics are more alike than they are different. The belief systems of each are radically different. Mormons and Christianity All Mormons will proclaim their "Christian" beliefs but such beliefs often do not square with the traditional Christian ideologies of either the Catholic or Protestant belief systems. An article in published in The Economist (02-09-02) during the 2002 Winter Olympics based in Salt Lake City, Utah, the center of the Mormon faith, explains that visitors to the impressive Temple Square and its visitors center will learn that Mormons think of themselves as "a mainstream American Christian church--faster-growing and more conservative than most, but otherwise nothing out of the ordinary" (p.
