Throughout the years, there has appeared much utopian literature, suggesting that there are ideal places to live. Human beings have not really found a utopia, but the ideal is not a bad thing to conjure. In relationship to this topic, a student asks: "Would you prefer to live in Mores Utopia or in state governed by Machiavellis prince? What do you see as the positives and negatives of each situation?" Mores Utopia was first written in 1516 and it was prior to a time when socialism or communism would actually come into the world. Yet, in Mores work, bartering or trading was rather commonplace. More was able to get rid of money as a problem. People would live a peaceful existence in relative freedom. Machiavelli had a different view of life and would published The Prince just three years prior to Mores Utopia, in 1513. Each created an ideal world, except that More was quite creative in his endeavor. He did away with global problems and created a fantasy life. Machiavelli, decidedly more practical, would create the best of all possible worlds, at least as he saw it. Much of The Prince looks at the world through the eyes of the monarch. Machiavelli appears to believe that Princes must meet the needs of the people and should never express selfishness. One might think that this would be good for the people, but in some way, it does limit their choices. After all, princes are making all of the decisions.
