valued as authentic. Nineteenth century criticism generated the view of John as being Hellenistic and that the stories unique to John were fictional. However, the newer view of John, which
sees "the Gospel as Jewish and historically reliable," encourages pastors to see John as having more relevance and worth. As Stephen Smalley has pointed out, the new view causes people
to "reckon seriously [with John]...when it departs from the Synoptics as well as when it overlaps them" (Burge 27). The belief that the stories in John that do not appear
in the Synoptics are true, and based on historical occurrence, naturally influences the way in which one looks for meaning and relevance to contemporary society. Difference between John and the
Synoptics and why Roughly 8 percent of John can be viewed as a direct parallel of material in one or more of the Synoptic Gospels (Burge 101). In John, there
is no "account of the transfiguration, no record of the institution of the Lords supper, no report of Jesus casting out a demon [and] no mention of Jesus temptations" (Carson
21). John, chapters 2-4, include narratives that are not included in the Synoptics, such as the "transformation of water into wine, his dialogue with Nicodemus and his ministry in Samaria,"
as well as the "resurrection of Lazarus, Jesus frequent visits to Jerusalem and his extended dialogues...in the temple and in various synagogues...[and] his private instruction to his disciples" (Carson 22).
The themes that dominate John are "largely absent from the Synoptics" (Carson 22). Considering this fact, it is logical that the author of John selected narratives that support these themes,
