a "hands-on" approach to improving educational opportunities for minorities with the stated intention of closing the achievement gap between mainstream and minority students. The NCLB will, presumably, "level" the playing
field in society between minorities and the white majority. However, what if this "leveling" does not work. Power (2003) takes the idea of "leveling" to its ultimate extreme in a
fictional scenario in which people are prohibited from reading past a certain predetermined, government approved level. Rather than raise everyone to a high level of literacy, this system ensures that
no one rises above a standard level of mediocrity. Sounds farfetched, but this idea does point out a basic truism, which is that a society treads on thin ice when
politicians, rather than educators, set the educational agenda. A survey of literature and perspectives taken from the field of education indicates that the importance of culture and diversity in
establishing how to about the task of educating the next generation and this information indicates that simply establishing an ideology, as the NCLB does, is not sufficient to achieve this
legislations ambitious goals, particularly when, as Lyons (2006) points out, the law is inequitably funded. Looking at a few of the multiplicity of educator who have addressed this topic illustrates
this point. For example, Brown (2008), as a writer, draws on her heritage as a Cuban American to create multicultural books for children that offers young readers, of any
ethnicity, a way of feel connected to other children, as this authors stresses the love for family and culture that is felt by her protagonist. Her characters tend to live
