tells us that the person asking the question believes that morality comes from God and that it must also be good, since God is good. We can further infer
that the questioner believes that morality exists only in connection to God. We might turn it around and ask if God exists, would immorality be possible? As we know,
there are a great many immoral acts committed in this world; should we then infer from that that God does not exist? The existence of God is a whole
other debate, so lets take it as a given, for the purposes of this discussion, that he does exist. And even though he exists, so do people who lie,
cheat, steal, kill, rape, rob, torture and maim; clearly, the existence of God doesnt prevent them from acting immorally. Its also equally obvious that they dont fear some sort
of punishment for these acts, even if they do believe in God. That brings up another point: do those people who act morally do so because they feel
that moral behavior is right and good, or because theyre afraid that theyll be punished if they make some sort of transgression? Much of Christian tradition is based on
the idea of punishment; the God of the Old Testament is particularly fierce in his judgments. So perhaps morality is in reality fear. One view of the issue comes
from Chapman Cohen, who writes that Christianity is a "revealed" religion, meaning that God "revealed" it to man, rather than man seeking God as in other religious traditions (Cohen, 2006).
