The question of whether God exists has plagued mankind practically since the beginning of our reign on earth. If God does not exist it might be
contended that humanity has neither an ethical objective nor the authority to judge either their own or any one elses behavior. In other words, the conclusion might be made
that if there is no God then we have no moral responsibility. This, of course, is a troubling conclusion and one that has been the target of considerable philosophical
criticism. Scholar Lewis B. Smedes, for example, has countered that in reality to be human is to be moral. Smedes (1987, 54) insists, in fact, that as humans
we have a: "deep primitive sense that morality is woven into the fabric of our
humanness...Morality is a basic component of any human sort of life, a reality we feel surely even if we cannot define it clearly"
Others, as would be expected, argue with Smedes contentions. The term morality, of course, defines that which is proper conduct, it
distinguishes right from wrong; morality points to proper behavior that serves social needs (Herbert, 1996). The underlying theme of morality is present in much of the worlds great literature
and in our social constructs as a whole. Regardless of the debate over the existence of God and over the inherent
