with very difficult situations that require some level of morality, or the dismissal of all morality in relationship to the characters. The times and conditions in the works are so
oppressive and difficult that the characters must essentially examine how morality can fit in their lives under such conditions. The following paper examines the theme of morality in the two
works, first examining them individually and then comparing the two. The Jungle The most prominent character in Sinclairs novel is that
of Jurgis. He is a man who possesses many strengths in relationship to his character and his morals are strong, though they are severely tested and threatened under the stressful
circumstances. In the beginning of the novel he is young and energetic and possessed of very strong and moral ideals. At one point, in the beginning, the narrator talks about
how many men stand in lines waiting for work, but Jurgis is quickly noticed because he has the vibrant and determined energy that gains attention from bosses. The narrator talks
about those men who stand their for months hoping for work and Jurgis states: ""Yes...but what sort of men? Broken-down tramps and good-for-nothings, fellows who have spent all their money
drinking, and want to get more for it" (Sinclair Chapter 2). In this the image of Jurgis is one that evokes thoughts of morality. He knows that drinking and
not being a hard worker are not moral qualities that befit a true man. He wants to support his family and he believes that such is possible in America, thus
indicating he has very strong morals. When his wife indicates that they, regrettably, need more money for a wedding, knowing it is all but impossible to come by, Jurgis realized,
