often difficult as it mandates persuasion and sometimes a look away from other possibilities. Obviously, to play both sides against the middle, or to make too many allowances for the
other position weakens ones own. At the same time, a student writing on this subject will want to look at both sides of an issue. For example, when writing in
response to the following question, a student will have to focus not only on his or her personal position but on the other side as well: " In your opinion,
are Americans better served by the conservative stance toward regulating personal, individual behavior and morality or by the liberal stance, which advocates governments neutrality in matters of personal behavior and
morality?" This is labeled as question two in an assignment submitted by a student. A student writing on this subject will want to begin an essay rather strongly, but not
be afraid to explore the other position. The other side must be outlined and its premises refuted. Otherwise, the argument will not stand up to scrutiny. The question as to
whether or not Americans are better served by the conservative stance in terms of personal, individual behavior is a significant one. There are basically three stances, one of which
is the libertarian view which to some extent promotes anarchy. It suggests that people be allowed to do whatever they like, as long as it does not hurt others. In
