it is the act itself that is morally considered. In other words, the ends can never justify the means according to Kant. Everything is black and white. Stealing is wrong. Lying is wrong. There are many dilemmas that people find themselves in and justify otherwise despicable actions due to the ultimate end. For example, someone is held captive by a sexual predator and agrees to engage in acts they otherwise would find unethical, but justify their conduct due to the fact that their life, or the lives of others, are in danger. Here, a judgment is made. Many would agree with the decision. However, some may not and contend that they simply could not go against their moral principles even if it was a proper course of action when lives are threatened. Yet, while to consequentialists, the ends have meaning, and many consider the idea that one would give up their lives for a principle absurd, there is another way to look at the situation. Suppose consenting to a sexual act ends in the victims demise anyway. One cannot argue that the ends justify the means. A better example perhaps and one that most would agree and see Kants ideas absurd is the act of lying. Suppose one is held hostage in a similar situation as the one described, but the victim does not have to do anything distasteful. All they must do is lie. Most people agree that lying is a negative thing to do. It is never good, but sometimes, people believe that it is necessary. Lying had become a part of daily life in the Clinton White House.
