death penalty base as their arguments that it is just retribution for heinous criminal acts, while others maintain the death penalty serves as an effective crime deterrent. Often, the
debate on the death penalty is limited to legal considerations or matters of criminal justice. However, the ramifications regarding the use of the death penalty extend far beyond the
parameters of retribution and deterrence. There are, even within these arguments, moral and ethical viewpoints worthy of examination. This is exactly what Richard Lippke accomplishes in his commentary
entitled, "Arguing Against Inhumane and Degrading Punishment," in which he freely acknowledges, "There are crimes so appalling that they challenge our resolve not to sink to the level of their
perpetrators as we punish them" (Lippke 29). However, the debate in favor of the death penalty as retribution falls short because in several instances, particularly in recent years, DNA
evidence has conclusively demonstrated that there have been convicted murderers executed who were falsely convicted and were, in fact, innocent. Isnt authorizing the death of another innocent person every
bit as heinous as the murder for which this person was tried, convicted and wrongly sentenced to death? As far as deterrence is concerned, according to Lippke, "Research into
the deterrent effects of the death penalty... has failed to show that it has statistically significant deterrent effects from those of lesser punishments" (29). The death penalty continues to inspire
scholarly debate because the issue is not singular, but in fact, is comprised of many complex issues. For example, it is depriving a human being of his or her
