in addition to moral practices (149). Moral relativism is essentially the idea that the validity of a moral principle is dependent upon the acceptance of the people (149). In
other words, there is no actual objective sense of right or wrong. Right and wrong is what the people say it is. Cultural relativism on the other hand is
sometimes called the diversity thesis (Pojman 164). The diversity thesis is something that recognizes the idea that moral rules are different between societies (164). The subtle difference between the two
concepts appears to be the fact that moral relativism goes to morality only and takes things a step further than cultural relativism that simply recognizes that cultural differences exist. Moral
relativism suggests that there is no such thing as a universal morality and cultural relativism makes no such judgment. It appears neutral in that regard. Ruth Benedict makes a case
for moral relativism. She uses homosexuality as an example. In her essay she explains that homosexuals are exposed to a great deal of conflict, but that this conflict is related
to the local culture (Benedict 153). She notes that different cultures deal with homosexuality in different ways. For instance, the American Indian tribes would simply allow certain effeminate men to
take on female occupations (153). Seemingly, their plight was accepted. They were in fact homosexuals but that was viewed as being just the way things are. The society recognized that
these people were simply different and not necessarily abnormal. This look at different cultures demonstrates how different one culture can be from another. In todays western culture for example,
