While many scoff at the way in which teens dress today, and much of this can be seen on shows like Jerry Springer or Sally Jesse Raphael, some might call these moral issues trivial. After all, one might say, who cares what someone is wearing when life and death is at stake? Others might say that life and death issues such as abortion are not that important as some people do not consider the fetus to be a person. And so, it is hard to say what morality encompasses exactly. To answer questions of morality in society today, it helps to go back and look at classic philosophical works. What is a moral theory? How does Mill approach the construction of moral theory? First, David Humes A Treatise of Human Nature will be reviewed. Humes Treatise rejects the idea that morality is attached to reason. Rather, people have moral sense. Some might call it common sense. Yet, the philosopher makes a very important point in this explanation of things. It means that if something sounds reasonable, that is not necessarily moral. For instance, if someone robs a store, and decides that he will not do it again but keeps the merchandise anyway to avoid prosecution, he is being reasonable. He knows he has done wrong and feels bad, but admitting to the crime might cause him more suffering. He chooses just to make better choices in the future. However, the moral thing to do would be to give the merchandise back and pay for what he did.
