force to resolve conflicts, or if it can be justified at all, particularly if one accepts that all people have equal moral standing; i.e., they are all equally intrinsically valuable
by virtue of the fact that they are human. If this argument is valid and all people have moral standing, then killing them would seem to be immoral by definition.
Discussion There is a definite problem reconciling the two positions. If a person believes that others have moral standing, it is almost impossible to find a way to approve of
killing them, no matter what the circumstances. If one accepts that armed conflict is a legitimate way of resolving disputes, that implies that the person or nation instigating the conflict
feels that it has the right to differentiate between the welfare of competing groups of individuals. That is, the instigator feels justified in judging that one or the other of
the groups in the wrong and taking up arms to defeat them. This in turn would seem to imply that one of the two is "better" than the other, or
more worthy of being saved, thus further implying that there is no such thing as equal moral standing for all. This brings up an age-old question, particularly if the
two groups are in another country: should a nation risk its own troops to get in the middle of what is essentially a matter occurring within the borders of another
sovereign nation, no matter how terrible? This isnt idle speculation. The confusion over the issue is undoubtedly one reason why the genocide in Rwanda was allowed to continue. The whole
world deplored it, but no one stepped in. Doing so would have meant instigating war against one of the sides already involved. It would also have meant finding one side
