parents who expect their 6-year-old to do the right thing simply because it is the right thing are expecting too much. Different theorists have offered guidance on the moral development of children. Lawrence Kohlberg, the most often cited theorist in the field of moral development, proposed three broad stages of moral development and six specific stages (Boeree, 2003). The first four are reported here as they relate to our 6-year-old child. Level I: Pre-conventional morality. Very young children are moral in a somewhat primitive way: 1. Punishment-obedience Orientation or the reward and punishment stage (Boeree, 2003), also known as Egocentric Reasoning. Toddlers up to about the age of 4 are at this stage of moral development. The orientation is to avoid punishment and get rewards (Boeree, 2003). Decisions are made based on the pain or pleasure the act will bring to the child. 2. Personal Reward Orientation, also called the exchange stage (Boeree, 2003). Beginning by about age 5, the child realizes other people have their own interests that should be considered so they engage in an exchange, Ill do this if you do that (Boeree, 2003). The child is concerned about what is fair but not necessarily concerned with justice (Boeree, 2003), Level II: Conventional morality. By about the time the child enters elementary school, so about age 6, they may be capable of conventional morality although they could still act under the two previous stages (Boeree, 2003). 3. Good boy-Nice girl Orientation (Boeree, 2003). At about age 6, children begin to try to live up to the expectations of others and actively seek approval. The child begins to become concerned with things such as trust, loyalty, and gratitude (Boeree, 2003). They may adhere rigidly to a concrete version of the Golden Rule but that may be limited ...
