caused a furor and that have been debated for many years. One such discovery is the ability to use stem cells to cure or prevent certain kinds of illnesses. Volumes
have been written about the value of stem cell research as well as about the ethical nature of this type of research. Perhaps the heart of the moral analysis of
stem cell research can be found in the fact that our President has vetoed two legislative bills to fund stem cell research. We can conclude our Presidents vetoes are directly
related to his religious beliefs which propose that human life begins at conception and to proceed with stem cell research basically means killing a life and one life cannot be
killed in order for another to live. Aldhous (2006) reported that scientists believe that putting an artificial chromosome that contains a specific gene can be put into a stem cell,
which can then be transplanted into a body to correct a genetic defect. That defect is one that could lead to illness and even death. As this author states, "This
means they might repair organs ravaged by genetic disease as well as acting as a vehicle for corrective genes" (Aldhous, 2006, p. 11). Researchers have demonstrated the efficacy of this
through experiments with mice; they specifically worked to correct the gene that prevents the growth of tumors (Aldhous, 2006). Scientists have also successfully "inserted artificial chromosomes into human embryonic stem
cells" (Aldhous, 2006, p. 11). Artificial chromosomes have a number of advantages (Aldhous, 2006). They are more stable, they can be purified more easily and they can be transferred with
