Childrens literature is extremely diverse both in content and in style. The most notable authors always manage to
produce work that is distinctly their own. Sometimes, they are rewarded greatly for their creativity. The Caldecott Medal and the Newberry Medal are considered the most prestigious awards
for outstanding U.S. childrens literature. The intent of this paper is to provide a brief overview of two books that have recently won these distinguished awards. In 2011
Clare Vanderpool won a Newberry Medal for "Moon Over Manifest" and Erin E. Stead won the Caldecott Medal for "A Sick Day for Amos McGee".
There are distinct differences between the type of content these two medals are awarded to. The Caldecott Medal is awarded to childrens books featuring outstanding pictorial interpretation
of story. These books are typically quite shorter than are Newberry Medal books. What they miss in terms of length, however, they make up for in graphics.
"A Sick Day for Amos McGee", for example, is only thirty-two pages long but practically every page features an illustration. The
illustrations in "A Sick Day for Amos McGee" are indeed wonderful. They bring to mind those of the old Dr. Sues series and definitely are appealing to young children.
