and 1950s. Although the main character is named "Essie Mae," the girl is really Moody herself, and her first-person narration gives the book its impact. The story opens when
Essie is four; her mother and father leave her and her sister to go to work each day (theyre sharecroppers); their cousin George Lee, a mean-spirited boy, is their babysitter
(Starks). He is constantly beating the girls; he knocks Essie down the front steps, bloodies her and raises a lump on her head (Starks). But her father seems oblivious to
the fact that it is George Lee who is the perpetrator of the beatings and other bad behavior; when the boy sets the cabin on fire, he lies and says
Essie did it, and her father believes George and beats her with a slat from a broken chair (Starks). Essie doesnt seem to be able to make much of an
impression; certainly her father pays no attention to her. She is afraid to speak up and tell the truth and this may be due not only to the fact that
she fears George Lee, but also to the fact that in her world, and indeed in society today, women have far less value than men. Not long after this incident,
Essies father tires of sharecropping and walks out, leaving Essie and her mother and sister to get along the best they can (Starks). Essies mother finds a job in the
city and the family moves, with other relatives helping them (Starks). Essies mother meets a man named Raymond at this time; he and Essie do not get along, but her
