monuments that were created in ancient times, or monuments themselves. Clearly, ancient architecture is often monumental and clearly also often has influenced later monumental architecture. And, as such, there are
many monumental pieces of architecture that offer the viewers a sense of awe and wonder at the sheer monumental nature of the building.
The following paper examines 4 different monumental pieces of architecture in the world. Those works are Cancelleria palace in Rome, Belvedere in Vienna, Altes museum in Berlin, and Basilica
in Vicenza. These works all seemingly have elements that are clearly held in common, especially considering that so many architects from the past relied heavily on columns and Roman and
Greek influence. They are also works that clearly stand on their own in very unique ways, all of them possessing elements that clearly speak to the viewer and speak of
monumentality. Cancelleria palace in Rome "The Palazzo della Cancelleria (Palace of the Chancellery, meaning the Papal Chancellery) in Rome is situated

in the new Renaissance style" (Essential Architecture, 2008). One can see this monumental element through the relatively flat exterior, rather than having possessed an exterior that was filled with depth
and detail. This is not to say that there is not detail, but rather that the detail is not offered up in depth as would be seen through pillars and
other architectural elements. But, the sense of monumentality is clearly there in detail as well as size, especially when one understands where many of the materials originated from.
