This same premise holds true in all areas of development. Montessoris ideas were rather revolutionary in this respect because it is only in the decades after her death that scientists have shown that neurological development occurs at different times in children. The practice of vertical grouping provides children the time to grow at their own speed. This practice also encourages teachers to view each child as an individual rather than as a child who fits within the age ranges found in cognitive and social developmental theories. Another reason is that by participating in vertical groups, children are able to learn from older children and/or children who are at a higher developmental stage (Family Montessori Preschool of Loyola, n.d.). We all learn by making mistakes and this may be especially true for young children who learn such a vast amount of diverse knowledge and skills during their early years. The Walden School (n.d.) wrote in a brochure that vertical grouping that allows children the opportunity to work "with children of different ages presents various educational opportunities, such as role modeling and teaching." This same benefit is identified by most writers when discussing the vertical grouping practice. Interacting with children of other ages is a natural thing to do. Consider the fact that when children play with the neighbors or in the park, they are more likely to be interacting with children who are a different age (Grovely State School, n.d.).
