"Dr. Montessori set out to establish a program for the children incorporating specially designed educational materials to meet what she identified as the needs of children" (Maplewood Montessori School, 2009).

One of the most important things about the Montessori method, and one that relates well to her belief that the hand was the
chief teacher, is seen in the fact that, "In her writings, she frequently compared the young mind to a sponge" (Monocacy Valley Montessori Public Charter School, 2009). The hand is
a clear tool of that sponge, taking in information and assisting the child in learning. One author describes the perspective, noting that
the hand as a chief teacher involves "the hands-on experience...Children learn best by doing, and Dr. Montessoris didactic materials are designed to achieve sensory, motor, and intellectual development through a
