absorbs everything around it. She said: "It may be said that that we acquire knowledge by using our minds; but the child absorbs knowledge directly into his psychic life" (Montessori,
1995, p. 36). The absorbent mind is one of Montessoris essential principles. Another is that there are different periods of growth when intelligence is sometimes directed inward when the child
is constructing knowledge within himself and sometimes it is directed outward when the child increases their knowledge from what is around them. The absorbent mind lasts from birth to about
age six. During this time there are two phases, unconscious growth and conscious growth. Montessori (1994) was very impressed with unconscious learning: "By merely living and without and conscious effort
the individual absorbs from the environment even a complex cultural achievement like language" (p. 14). Between birth and preschool, children absorb whatever they are exposed to, which is why it
is so important to expose them to things that are good. For example, the infant cries and the parent goes to the baby who might be hungry or may have
a soiled diaper or who just needs company. The child makes the connection that if they need something, they can cry and someone will come. There are also times when
