teaching the child is the teacher. Even teachers think this. But, here, Montessori is saying, no, thats the wrong perspective. Weve all heard about how important the environment is in
shaping a childs personality, intelligence and so on but we seem to forget that as soon as the child enters school. The environment encompasses a vast array
of diverse stimuli. It incorporates all persons, objects and all experiences the child has, in school, at home and wherever he is. In each setting, the child learns through observation,
through conversation, and through direct explanations and instruction. This is why it is essential for children to be in positive encouraging and inspiring environments as much as possible. In these,
the child looks at others as role models of what kinds of feelings and behaviors work to achieve what he wants and what doesnt work. He learns values and character.
It is the culmination of all experiences that will form the childs personality, values and so on beginning in the early years. It is essential for teachers to remember
how critical parents/caregivers are in the development of the child. If we as teachers remember this, we will take the extra effort to keep in touch with parents to keep
them involved. We have the opportunity to educate parents about how the environment affects their childs learning and development. We all know that even the most distractible child will put
all his energies into doing something that he really likes. This is what Montessori (1966) is saying here: "As soon as children find something that interests them they lose their
