Maria Montessori gave us a methodology through which we could reach some of the most difficult to reach children. The Montessori system was developed, in fact, to reach the
societally disadvantaged children of Montessoris time. This system was more than a methodology for rote education. Instead it was a method that would go hand-in-hand with societal change.
Montessori has a particular benefit in that it allows the nurturing of the childs spirituality. When considering how Montessori can be
used to nurture a childs spirituality, it is first important to note that there are very distinct differences between spirituality and religion. Spirituality is the unbridled essence of a
childs metaphysical view of our Creator, of the world, and of our place in that world and our relation to our Creator. Religion, in contrast, is the refined approach
to spirituality. Religion is dictated by structure and form while spirituality obeys no distinct form or structure. Indeed, according to Plato, spirituality is not even bound by the
body itself. It is immortal and responsible for a number of life functions from the simplistic function of movement to the complex function of knowledge. Once we are
born, for example, Plato contends that we forget this realm of pure Forms but that knowledge exists in the memory of forms as that memory is prompted by sense impressions.
Spirituality, in fact, embraces more than just our relationship with God. It embraces our creativity, our connection with the earth and the plants and animals that live here,
