In fact, as one author notes, "Modern scientists are now, almost a century later, finding scientific data to support her discoveries" (A Childs Place, 2009). The following paper examines the aspect of the method that involves what is called the "whole child" approach. Montessori: Developing the Entire Child "Dr. Maria Montessoris focus on the whole child led her to develop a school that is focused on the student, rather than the teacher-centered classroom. This method came about through many years of observation of children to recognize how children learn best" (Janes Montessori Academy, 2009). In focusing on the whole child there are many different areas that are addressed in the format of the method. One author notes, for example, "Activities promote the development of cognitive skills, social skills, emotional growth, and physical coordination" and as such focus on the whole child rather than on one particular educational perspective, say that perspective which focuses on academic skills alone (Capital Montessori School, 2009). In looking at the particular skills and what is taught, thus further illustrating the whole child approach, there is the focus on practical life. This involves an awareness of taking care of oneself as well as ones environment. "Hand washing, dish washing, plant watering, and polishing are some activities that help your child to become independent while preparing them for real life" (Creative World, 2007). Another area is that of sensorial wherein children learn things like shapes and colors, sounds and textures (Creative World, 2007).
