to see things with a divergent emphasis or interpretation and it is this tool which is used successful to convey the authors message in Larry Watsons novel Montana 1948 which
communicates the difference in adult and childhood worlds. Indeed the book can even be seen as reminiscent of Harper Lees work. The portrayal of loyalty and justice is an issue
which every adult will probably face at some point and for a child can be the cause of the loss of innocence. The
story is told through the eyes of a boy on the verge of adolescence. David Hayden is twelve years old, not old enough in the readers perception to yet have
the adult insights that experience brings, but of an age where he is aware of events which happen around him as well as those which involve him. He is at
the stage in life of becoming more aware whilst retaining boyhood innocence (Oder, 1995). As with most childhood stories it begins in
a summer, again this is reminiscent of most childhood memories that the reader may have, apart from specific seasonal memories in retrospect childhood appears to be one long summer, with
flowers, sunshine and laughter which is marred by the invasion of the adult world. The mood of the story is set by
the countryside in which the story takes place. A village of about 2,000 people near the Canadian boarder which is described as difficult to live in "the harshness of
