and similarities between the book and filmed version are rather striking. One can see by viewing the film that Leconte took no short cuts. Yet, the film is not exactly true to Simenons work. The film begins with the body laying in the field so the audience knows right away that they are viewing a murder mystery. This technique, where the body is displayed in the opening scene, is utilized by the American television show Law and Order for example. This program often commences with a body within the first few minutes of the shows beginning. Of course, this opening is somewhat different from the beginning of the novel but that is typical. Films can easily open in a more abrupt fashion than a written work. The plot in the film is adapted from the written novel. Yet, while the plot is much the same, there is a great deal more tension in the film. In reading the book, one is struck by the tireless pages of descriptive language. Of course, Simenon is by no means a writer with too many words. Yet, in comparison to the movie, this fact seems to stand out. While the book is seductive, the filmed version allows the audience a chance to relax and view the dance of the characters without thinking. In some way, a film allows the audience less freedom but the viewer is drawn in. Perhaps the book is slightly more erotic. The actors cannot do the writing justice. In the book, the characters are forever teasing each other. There is seeming lust on the part of Monsieur Hire but there is a more provocative action by the character in the novel.
