student understanding of lesson material, then, has become a focus and a central part of educational strategies. In many traditional classrooms, educators instruct and monitor student understanding of classroom
material through group monitoring of responses to questions. Often these educators will utilize the "pop quiz" scenario, which requires that students show recall of recently presented material or a
conceptual understanding of what has been discussed. These pop quizzes, then, are often followed by larger assessments, including weekly, biweekly or quarterly exams. Though these types of assessments
can help bring students in alignment with school, district, state and national educational directives, they are often limited in terms of the positive impact on student performance, student motivation and
educator adaptation. Assessments of student understanding of materials or concepts presented in the classroom should serve a few distinct functions. First, these assessments should help to motivate
learners to understand the materials presented in conjunction with educator support and opportunities to enhance learning. Second, monitoring processes or assessments should provide information for the educator and student
regarding their performance and highlight any potential need for change. Finally, assessments should inform educator actions, including defining the benefits of certain types of learning modules, the impacts of
