Discussion When lobbyists and others give money to political parties, they do so not because they believe the money will go to help all Americans, but because they know that they can influence political decisions in their favor. "The dominating influence of wealthy special interests in the funding of campaigns has eroded public trust in our political system and discouraged political participation" (Money in politics). Accepting money from wealthy special interest groups has led to a system that "gives undue access to lawmakers and influence on legislation to those who contribute large amounts to campaigns" (Money in politics). The result is that the voice of the ordinary taxpayer is no longer heard; and "we see corporations and wealthy individuals benefiting at the expense of all Americans" on a vast range of issues (Money in politics). Campaign finance reform is an idea whose time has come, but one that is not likely to be implemented, because it benefits incumbents of both parties, and no one is going to vote for the measure that will cost them their job. There has been some progress made, in that campaign contributions of "hard" money-money that is given directly to candidates-has been capped and "soft money" (money given to organizations that work to elect a candidate but are not directly affiliated with the campaign) has been outlawed (Money in politics). The effect has been to push "political parties and candidates to seek small donations from a broad base of contributors, broadening the participation of average citizens in campaigns" (Money in politics).
