to many people. This paper uses his interview with Stephen Cruz to comment on the idea, articulated by poet Wallace Stevens, that "money is a kind of poetry." Discussion The
first thing to consider is that were working with the words of a poet, so it might be interesting to consider the Terkel interview as a poem and consider just
the form for a moment. If we do that, then we could consider that each time Cruz gets a promotion and a raise, he has completed another stanza of the
poem. The poem begins at a fairly high point, in which he receives multiple offers, and then continues on an upward arc as he climbs the corporate "ladder," until it
reaches its climax with a very well-paying job (for the time). Then he leaves corporate America, and its like hes fallen off a cliff. In terms of poetry (or tragedy),
he becomes an Oedipus or a Hamlet, a noble heart that cracks and breaks at what should be his moment of triumph. If we pull back from structure to consider
what Cruz is actually saying about money, its very hard to find anything poetic in his experience. He says that he was happy until he realized that he wasnt really
getting anywhere on his own; he owed all his advancement to affirmative action (Terkel). He learns several valuable lessons: he had a glass office not because he was particularly valuable
but because the company wanted to make him visible: "I was the visible man" (Terkel 349). This is a direct reference to the classic American novel Invisible Man by Ralph
Ellison; its the story of a black mans journey through a society that refuses to see him because of the color of his skin. Here, the color of Cruzs skin
