Impressionism Hollander (1998) in reviewing Meyer Schiparos Impressionism: Reflections and Perceptions (1998), reminds us that art is never created in a vacuum. The known art center for
the world at the time the Impressionists were forming their thoughts and their canvasses was Paris. It was a glittering and exciting world, and artists were actually seeing light
as subject matter. They wanted to capture the nuances it made on the water as well as the land at sunrise and twilight; it was not so much the
sense of light and shadow any more, as it was the sense of light as energy. That energy had a negative side when Napolean formally declare war on Prussia in
July of 1870. Many of the Paris artist quickly moved to London. After the fall of Paris in 1871 Monet moved to Holland Claude Monet (1840 -
1926) According to Waldron (1991) legend has it that Monet discovered his grocery purchase had been wrapped in a Japanese wood-bloc print in brilliant colors. He was intrigued, went
back to the store and bought all they had. The prints were strong bright colors; not all images were centered on the picture plane; strong diagonals grabbed the viewers
