It is the story of one womans survival in a world controlled by men, a world where she tries her best to become a gentlewoman, yet she does not have the background to succeed. The following paper examines her attitudes towards money. Moll Flanders and Money In the beginning we see her innocence about money and about becoming a gentlewoman. She tells some ladies about her desire to be a gentlewoman, a woman who does not have to work and is noble and regal. They apparently begin to give her money: "They were pleased to be familiar with me, and like my little prattle to them, which, it seems, was agreeable enough to them, and they gave me money too" (Defoe). She takes all of that money and gives it to her mistress-nurse, seemingly unconcerned with money. She is provided for, given clothes and food, and does not see any need for money. This sort of innocent attitude goes on as she seems to innocently become somewhat romantically involved with one brother while being engaged to the other. The one brother that she is not engaged to gives her money to essentially break of their relationship, telling her that he wants to pay her for any liberties he has taken with her. We, the reader, clearly see this as something of a payment to a prostitute, but Moll seems particular blind to this reality: "Indeed, I had preserved the elder brothers bonds to me, to pay #500, which he offered me for my consent to marry his brother; and this, with what I had saved of the money he formerly gave me, about as much more by my husband, left me a widow with about #1200 in my ...
