but generally dismiss it as bothersome, but not harmful. However, empirical research clearly indicates that, particularly in regards to people who are allergic to mold, this is much more than a household nuisance, it is a household health risk that can be very dangerous. However, before examining the health effects of environmental mold exposure, it is helpful to understanding the issues involved to define what is meant by mold. Mold is a "naturally occurring fungi that can thrive wherever moisture is present" (Draper, 2005, p. 66). Damp conditions are particularly conducive to mold growth when moisture is combined with poor ventilation and high humidity. These efforts pay off in maintaining health because the ill effects associated with mold are dose related, that is, the effects are related to the degree of exposure (Draper, 2005). The first studies connecting respiratory illness with "damp indoor environments were made 12 to 15 years ago," and since then, these studies have replicated often enough and with the same results to make denying this connection no longer plausible (Horner, 2005, p. 213). The reasons why mold is believe to be dangerous to human health are various. One reason is believed to be mycotoxin exposure, while other experts believe that allergens play a more powerful role (Horner, 2005). The debate continues because all molds produce numerous biologically active substances. For example, glucan is produced by virtually all types of mold and it has ...
