outsiders, or even to practicing religious folk who question their preachers words that riches are okay, this seems noble. It seems just. After all, why should someone live well and
be able to afford steak and lavish vacations, while another human being is struggling to survive. There is something callous about that and in fact, wealth is a part and
parcel of most religions in some way. In examining the lives of prophets, one sees examples of those who practice what they preach. In looking at the life of Mohammed,
how has his example served to demonstrate that others should follow his lead? What was his personal life like, and how does it impact Islam today? Concern for the
impoverished is a basic Islamic tenet ("Poverty," 2001). Might that influence have come directly from Mohammads life? First, it is important to note that Mohammed was born into a
poor family and was not unlike other great men who came from poverty. While that is the case, he did not live in poverty for long. During the time
that Mohammed was in Mecca, he was surrounded by Arabs who believed in God at the time, but things were strained. He saw a great deal of turmoil and destruction.
