as how Jesus and Mohammad are understood within the context of religious tradition. Both Jesus and Mohammad were born to humble origins. Jesus birth marks the beginning of the
first century in the Christian world and he was raised within the family of a ordinary carpenter (as it is logical to presume Jesus learned this trade from Joseph). Mohammad
was born to a family of merchants living in Mecca around 570 AD (Funk 36). As with Jesus, Muhammad was very aware of inequalities in wealth and the misery of
the poor (Funk 36). Muslim tradition indicates that Islam originated in Arabia around 611 AD, which is when the Prophet Mohammad saw his first vision of the Angel Gabriel,
who informed him that he was the last prophet (Bright). Within a century, Mohammads followers established an Islamic empire, sweeping aside the ancient empires of Byzantium and Persia (Bright). Christian
scripture indicates that Jesus was inspired by divine visions and felt a intense personal connection with God as he referred to God in prayer as "Father." Both religions draw
on the heritage of Jewish scripture and the idea that their holy scripture is, likewise, a product of direct divine inspiration (Bush 309). In the Islamic view, the first prophets
of God were those of the Old Testament, then came Jesus, whom they consider to be another divine prophet, and then Mohammad, the last and, in Islamic estimation, the greatest
Prophet (Bush 309). The four gospels of the Christian New Testament provide the basis for what Christians believe concerning the life and meaning of Jesus life and, other than the
gospels, the only mention of Jesus in non-Christian sources is by a Jewish historian, Flavius Josephus (Harrington). Although tradition says that Mohammad had scribes around him at all times who
