of production, regarding both what they produce and this production takes place (Marx & Engels, 2001). In order to survive, people must consume, which necessarily entails production and the
processes involved in production require the establishment of relations with others. In this regard, Marx argued that throughout history, various economic systems, such as feudalism, capitalism and socialism, had been
devised, with each encompassing specific modes of production (Hodgson, 1995). Marx argued that a mode of production shapes a society. For example, the foraging mode of production is characteristic
of primitive societies and characterized by production being shared by all members of a tribe, and, likewise, all share in consuming the product of their production (Mandel, 1971). In this
form of society, a ruling class does not emergence since there is no product surplus to support it. On the other hand, the Asiatic mode of production is considered to
be the initial form of a class-oriented society, as in this mode a small group of individuals employ violence in order to produce surplus through coerced labor (Mandel, 1971). This
mode of production and the social relations this entailed made possible the great monument construction of ancient eras, such as the construction of the pyramids or the Great Wall of
China. Inherent in this mode of production is the creation of a ruling class that typically derived its right to rule on theological terms as incarnations of gods. The
