behind the times in terms of technology. The Marines take a lot of pride in accomplishing difficult tasks under less-than-ideal conditions, but this "can do" spirit sometimes works against them
by making them reluctant to change. This paper considers the way in which the Marines have updated their logistical systems and answers questions about these changes. Discussion The first question
is to describe the benefits the USMC achieved by adopting a new approach to supply chain management relative to past practices. The Corps has been bogged down by what are
known as "legacy systems"-systems that have been in place for years and are still in operation despite their inefficiency and ineffectiveness (Malykhina, 2004). Organizations in particular seem reluctant to do
away with these systems, sometimes because they are familiar and easy to use; sometimes because they are readily available; and sometimes simply because change is difficult for everyone. But the
Marines knew that their decades-old systems were causing a great many problems; in particular, the old systems didnt work with newer technology, making communications difficult between different units; or between
various units and headquarters; or between units and their suppliers (Malykhina, 2004). It was also difficult for units to locate supplies; for instance, a unit might have a surplus
of something that another unit needed, but the second had no way to locate the items (Malykhina, 2004). The inefficient logistics system was having an impact on the Marines mission
in Iraq, among other problems (Malykhina, 2004). In March 2004, BGen Edward Usher, who is in charge of logistics, testified before Congress that problems with the systems "made it difficult
to identify actual shortages, to locate needed items within stocks for reallocation, and to direct and track the movement of ordered items to requesting units" (Malykhina, 2004, p. 22). In
