to Japan from China, such as Confucianism, these two cultures contained very basic differences that resulted in the radically different ways that Japan and China reacted to prolonged contact with
Westerns in the mid-1800s. Much of the future of these two countries was determined from this reaction. Japan succeeded at modernization, absorbing the aspects of Western culture that they
admired and quickly becoming a world power. Although there were proponents of change in China, including a young emperor, these forces lost to the entrenched power of Chinese conservatives who
saw the influx of new ideas as a threat to Chinese tradition. The reasons behind these two reactions can be found in the cultures of these countries. The Chinese
thought of themselves as the citizens of the only truly civilized society in existence. Their huge empire stretched across thousands of miles, and they had been the major power in
their world over the course of their five thousand-year history. The Chinese were aware of the "far West," but considered Europe to be the home of more barbarians, who existed
on the outskirts of the civilized world, which in their minds was China, and only China. It took a tremendous paradigm change for China to accept the concept
that anything "good" or even worth doing could originate outside of China. While some forces within the country recognized this fact, they had to compete against those conservatives whose power
was entrenched and all pervasive. It was the conservatives who triumphed and China who suffered. In contrast, the Japanese, while equally isolationist in their own way, had also existed in
close proximity to the strength of the Chinese culture throughout their history. The Japanese, as a result, assimilated many cultural practices from the Chinese, particularly those related to Confucianism. In
