Today, this Australian flag carrier airline has a vast network, covering 44 countries and 57 regional airports in Australia1, operating 5,600 flights each week, with a fleet of 252 aircraft2 employing approximately 32,500 employees (Qantas, 2010). Despite difficult trading condition in the airline industry, which has seen a number of airlines enter bankruptcy, Qantas has not only been able to survive, it has remained profitable through the difficulties. The profit level may be constrained, but this is indicative of a strong firm. However, to assess the firm and look at it in more detail and appreciate the way that it may be operating it can be examined looking at the firm an influences considering the environment, the social structure, technology and culture. These will be examined with the use of modernist theories. 1.1 Environment The airline is one which is highly influences by the environment in which it operates. To assess the organization in its environment it is possible to look at Qantas using resource dependency theory. This requires looking at the firm in the context of the resources needed for the operations (Hatch and Cunliffe, 2006). Identifying the resources and their destination within the firm allows for an assessment of the power dependencies (Hatch and Cunliffe, 2006). As an international airline Qantas has a wide range of resources needed, including the supply of aircraft and services to maintain the aircraft, fuel and reshipment/food supplies, employees to run the flights and provide the support services, including sales and markets, access to the airports and take of and landing slots at the airports, access to the customers to sell the tickets, directly and through third parties.
