are that: 1. it identifies at its foundation the value of science and the desire to uncover certain truths about psychological function and behavioral function through the use
of scientific processes; 2. it maintains the value of empiricism as the epistemological foundation of psychology and further notes the value of experimentation and observations as a part of
the science of psychology; and 3. it places at its center the individual, emphasizing the importance of the individual mind as the focal point for psychological study (p. 212).
These points have not only fueled the focus on empirical psychological research, but have also been used to create the focus for psychological study over the course of the past
five decades. Postmodernism appears to be in contradiction to some of the central tenets of modernism psychology. Postmodernism maintains that 1. the approach reconstructs modernism in the
field of psychology by looking at the characteristic of foundationalism, essentialism and dualism by maintaining that psychology is inherently anti-realism and anti-scientism (Ye, 2004). Postmodernism is based on
the belief that psychology is inherently based on a social construction, and utilizes this socialization as the foundational epistemology (Ye, 2004). Further, postmodernism defines the major constructs of psychology,
including the nature of knowledge, the conceptual view of truth and the impacts of meaning, as they are shaped within the scope of a socialized view (Ye, 2004). Finally,
while the modernist perspective has generally viewed language as a passive tool through which individuals can express thoughts or emotions, postmodernism is linked to the ideal that self-expression is pivotal
