Gropius, Mies, Saarinen, and others were the innovators who set the tone (114). Followers include generations of corporate and individual practitioners such as Philip Johnson, Marcel Breuer, and Gordon Bunschaft
as well as those who were not as well known but important such as Eliot Noyes, Edward Durrell Stone, and Wallace K. Harrison (114). These were the architects who
shaped the cities and campuses around America (114). They designed buildings with steel and glass, terrazzo, as well as acres of wood paneling, white wall expanses, and furniture and
textiles that would go well with the new architecture. Yet, aside from being a new style, it was one that was fighting against the old. Just as art movements
like modern art was opposed to what went before due to constrictions, the same holds true for modern architecture. All the rules had changed. As it began, modernism revealed
the absurd lengths to which historic conventions hamstrung buildings into preconceived stylistic notions, and it offered a message of innovation which was empowering (Dickinson 39). Indeed, modernism may be equated
with freedom and creativity and a hodge podge of other styles that may be considered offshoots. Early modernism addressed undeniable problems with evident truths (39). It was clearly a
break away from convention. No longer did rules dominate but rather, the eye of the artist was recognized. Clean lines were preferred over a specific stylistic decoration. Corners were straight
and the eye was seemingly pleased. Still, there are some who prefer the old style. Whatever ones preference, it seems that modernism dominates, even since the advent of postmodernity. Significant
