The use of the term modernism most often conveys a sense of something happening in contemporary
times, in times which are separate from history. In literature, the term modernism is applied to a considerable body of work completed in the early Twentieth Century. A
certain component of the artists of this time period, however, congealed their work on an inherited narrative model of realism or naturalism (Longman, 2001). Others, however, bravely forged away
from tradition and convention. Longman (2001, PG) notes: "The modern writer was faced with
an enormous, Nietzschean task: to create new and appropriate values for modern culture, and a style appropriate to those values. As a consequence, there is often a probing, nervous quality
