continued, many of these movements began to actively pursue aesthetics that defied those of the modernist criteria, evolving into art that can be labeled as postmodern (Benz). Postmodern art can
be understood as a reaction to having any restrictions or boundaries on what is considered to be art. Therefore, postmodern art offers a subjective view of some aspect of the
artists life using whatever material or method that the artist considered effective (Benz). How can we distinguish between the various kind of modern and postmodern art? How an art work
is labeled is really incidental to the more salient question of discerning the artists purpose by viewing the art work. However, each "ism" typically developed its own philosophy and approach
to art. For example, Cubism has its roots in African tribal art and favors geometrical forms and representing objects by their most basic geometrical features, while Surrealism focuses on
representing associations made by the subconscious and the significance of dreams, bringing the psychological into the realm of art (Wanczura). Abstractionism, like Cubism, reduces the artists subject to its
most basic shape, eliminating the details of its form in reality in order to provide insight into the way that the artist perceives it. Abstract art moves toward disassociating art
from representational meaning and locating the meaning of the art within the work itself (Fleming 364). On the other hand, abstract art can also convey profound meaning, as in the
case of Pablo Picassos mural "Guernica," which was painted in reaction to the German bombing this village into oblivion during the Spanish Civil War. In this work, Picasso utilizes a
