used are, more often than not, modern materials and not primitive materials. It is, in many ways, perhaps an approach to the primitive side of mankind, a desire to move
towards a more simplistic, yet no less artistic, platform of expression. In relationship to the primitive art of today there are several critics, or authors, who address this movement. The
authors to be discussed herein are Thomas McEvilley, Rasheed Araeen, and James Clifford. The following paper examines their perspectives and then examines what one particular artist, Ruby Williams, is doing
in this form of art. McEvilley, Araeen, and Clifford In first examining the topic at hand we look to the ideals and opinions of McEvilley, Araeen, and Clifford.
McEvilley appears to be a critic and author who admires and appreciates the new primitive art movement, giving speeches at various events which present such art. In one article authored
by McEvilley he is examining the reality of art, and its progression, in the Western world as it relates to supposedly less civilized nations. The exhibit he is discussing is
the 2000 Dakar Biennale of contemporary African art. In one portion of this article he indicates that "The relationship between modernism and Westernization is a controversial issue, in part, perhaps,
because it is not well understood and is usually treated simplistically. African art in the modern vein is all too often subject to comments" which are generally negative (McEvilley 41).
This is because there is a clear sense of the primitive and too many art critics feel that a culture that presents itself as primitive, though its art, is not
advancing artistically. McEvilley disagrees with this. This sort of perspective seems to fall in line with the perspectives of Araeen, who in one particular case, as it relates to
