of political science at the University of California, Irvine. His work focuses on the citizens role in the political process. Mark Wattenberg is also a professor of political science at
UCI. Their book is well-written but very scholarly and somewhat dry, though that is probably merely a matter of taste. The authors have analyzed in detail the role that
political parties play in 20 nations and argue that although the parties are still exercising their traditional roles, they are losing public support, as voters become more skeptical in general
about partisan political parties. This is an excellent resource for a broad understanding of the way in which political parties developed and why they are still relevant: Its too soon
to write an obituary for political parties, but a pattern of partisan decline ... is increasingly apparent in almost all advanced industrial democracies" (Dalton and Wattenberg, 2000, p. 3).
